Cree reports a breakthrough innovation in canopy LED lighting with the introduction of the CPY250 canopy and soffit lighting series. According to Cree it Consumes 75 percent less energy than the MH (metal halide) systems it’s designed to replace and 5–15 percent less energy with more than 35 percent increased performance compared to competing higher-cost LED luminaires, the new CPY Series delivers exceptional visual environments across a range of canopy applications, including gas stations, bank drive-through ATMs and hotel/airport drop-off centers.

“Canopy operators are under constant pressure to lower operating costs while simultaneously providing safe and visually appealing lighting,” said Greg Merritt, vice president, lighting at Cree. “The new CPY Series, with its slim, low-profile design, is the perfect upgrade solution. The high-performance LED luminaires not only outperform existing LED and MH solutions but also enable the lowest total cost of ownership objectives to be achieved.”

Available in both flat and prismatic drop lens, the CPY250 provides two illumination aesthetics to meet the visual, as well as the vertical and horizontal illumination, performance needs of a typical canopy application. The CPY250 can seamlessly mount to virtually any canopy deck and is secured in place with self-sealing screws that provide a reliable water-tight seal. The integrated driver within the canopy housing further simplifies installation, reducing installation time and cost. The new canopy series also features Cree’s 10-year limited warranty.

Although there has been much conjecture over the subject of whether or not Samsung will be introducing a smartphone with a flexible organic LED display in 2013, it does seem increasingly likely, based on the latest rumours.



It is now thought that the Galaxy Note 3, which should go on sale in the autumn, could well be endowed with a flexible screen, making it the first smartphone to feature this type of technology.



Various sources have conflicting reports to offer, but it is currently believed that Samsung actually has a trio of potential designs for the handset under consideration, one of which features the flexible screen.



Using UPB LED display technology, the Galaxy Note 3 will apparently be able to bend and take the pressures of physical force with greater ease than any other device to date.



3G.co.uk reports that a source close to the manufacturer believes the screen to be six inches across the diagonal and because of the limitations of UPB LED hardware, it will only have a 720p HD resolution.



This may be something of a disappointment for those who had hoped to see a full HD 1080p pixel count, as is found on the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, if this sacrifice is required to make flexible display technology a reality, then it may be worth accepting.



The screen will be just a third as thick as other display hardware, as well as being lighter, but of course with the same number of pixels stretched across a wider area, it will also have a lower ppi count than the previous generation Galaxy Note device.

LG Targets to be Market Leader in LED TV Segment

LG Electronics India, with the release of a new range of flat panel televisions, is primarily eyeing the replacement cum upgradation market in the non-metro cities in order to stay ahead in the race.

According to Rishi Tandan, marketing head, home entertainment at LG Electronics India, LG ranked second in the LED TV market with a 24.2% market share.

Samsung India is at the numero uno position with 26.2% market share and Sony was at the number three spot with 20% market share, said Tandan.

The flat panel market television market was 5.5 million units, which is expected to be 7.5 million units this year. LED TVs now account for around 80% of the total flat panel television market.

“We are aiming to have a 30% share in the LED TV market by the end of this year. We are targeting the upgradation market as a lot of people with CRT TVs are now upgrading to LEDs,” said Tandan.

According to him, the company is already in the process of making an exit from the LCD market and this pie would see more contraction by the end of this year.

“The price gap between LCD and LED has narrowed down sharply and that has caused the demise of interest in LCD TVs. Two years back, the price gap between a LED and LCD TV was around Rs 10,000 but that has come down to around Rs 3000 now,” he added.

Another reason behind rise of LED televisions is the fact that they are sleeker, provide better picture quality and consume less power than LCD televisions.

LED TVs contributed around 37% to the home entertainment vertical of LG India, in terms of quantity.

The company is also making substantial investments for the marketing activities and has allocated Rs 100 crore for the same.
